Archaeologists in China claim to have found a miniature replica Swiss wristwatch in a 400-year old tomb this week. A small metal ring in the likeness of a ladies' wristwatch with hands pointing at 10 and 2 was found encrusted in the soil around a tomb being excavated for a documentary.

It's difficult to tell from the photo or the article if the miniature watch is solid metal, or if it in fact contains any clockworks. The article also says that the ring has the word 'Swiss' etched across the back, if there were any doubt as to the origins of the watch.

Is anyone else reminded of that Star Trek: TNG episode where they found Data's head in that mine under San Francisco from 500 years in the past? Yeah, it's that kind of weird.

I was finally able to squeeze a couple hours into my schedule this weekend to finish inking another page. I'm still way behind on my plan to get another sizable buffer together before I start posting again, though. Another option, which I may default to, would be to not worry so much about a lengthy buffer, and instead to just try to maintain an even level of productivity, posting work as it's ready. My friend and studiomate Les, for example, works with a pretty short buffer, but his updates are steady and frequent. If I could manage to put more steady hours in each week I might be able to get back to a regular schedule without more than a page or two of buffer. As always, we'll see how it goes.

Also, I'm starting to plan my convention appearance schedule for 2009, with Emerald City Comicon and Stumptown Comics Fest already on my schedule for April. Any other conventions I should know about or try to make it to? Tell me about it in the forums and I'll see what I can do!

I just finished working up my second ever Threadless submission. It's pending approval at the moment, but I wanted to post it here as well, just cause. I've been wracking my brain trying to come up with a good not-too-, but-still-steampunky t-shirt design, and I really like this one. I've got another design idea that I'll work up later this week.

Even if this doesn't get approved or selected for printing at Threadless I would like to make a run of these myself at some point. Click the thumbnail to see the full design! And if it gets approved, do me a favor and go vote for it!

Update

Now you can show some steampunky love to your computer with this new desktop wallpaper image! Click the image below for a 2560x1600 pixel image which you can crop and scale to your whim. Enjoy!

UPDATE #2

The design was just approved at Threadless, so please go vote for it! Also, help spread the word! The more people vote, the more likely we'll all be able to wear one of these shirts by 2009!

I've seen reports coming in from webcartoonists who use Google ads on their sites that their readers are reporting various political ads being served locally, ads with which the artists didn't personally agree. I understand Google accepting ads from political organizations, but a lot of us tend to be pretty protective of the message our sites present.

The biggest offender seems to be California's proposed ban on same-sex marriages, Prop. 8. Personally I disagree with this ban, and am very much in favor of marriages of any kind. I feel like if there's one thing this world needs more of, it's expressions of love between people. And if getting married is something that people (any consenting legal adults, at least) want to do with each other, more power to them. My apologies to any readers who looked through the archives and saw an ad supporting such a ban. I'm not aware of any such ads on my site, but I see the potential was there. If I lived in California, I assure you I would have totally voted against such a ban.

I'm not sure what ads you all are seeing in the Ellie Connelly archives, but the ones I'm seeing here in Oregon are placed by Defend Oregon, a group that seems to agree with me politically, which I suppose is pretty lucky for me. Just to be safe, though, I'm going to disable those archive ads until after election day.

Hopefully I'll be back tomorrow with some actual new art or something! We can only hope.

For Change!

My only complaint is that people seem to think I'm a girl. It comes, I'm sure, from having chosen a name that's also a color, and having a female protagonist in my comic. Oh, and not having a bio/picture up on my site. hm. Okay, I can fix part of that...

Anyway, the winners will be announced tonight on a live podcast starting at 7:pm Pacific, 10:pm Eastern. Give it a listen!

Sad news today, I was hoping it wouldn't come to this so quickly, but I have to take a break to build up a buffer again. As of today (Oct. 17) my buffer, which started out at close to 30 episodes, has dwindled to zero. Work and home life have conspired with my own laziness to keep me from drawing as much as I'd have liked, and there are no more finished updates ready to go for Monday.

I have the next page pencilled, and will be inking it this weekend as part of 24-hour comics day, so it's possible that I could get it posted by monday, though it would be uncolored. I could conceivably continue like that, posting new uncolored material as it's available, and coloring them in and replacing them in the archives as time goes on, though I'd prefer to only post colored material in the first place.

I'm curious to know what you all might think of that, though, so I've gone and set up a poll in the forum. Let me know what you think!

An article on the Independent.ie site reports a fairly substantial set of UFO sightings north of Dubln, Ireland. Reports came in from a local politician, a pilot at the nearby Dublin airport, and from ordinary citizens, one of whom apparently caught a video of the 'craft' on his camera-phone. The video was presented last week at a conference on UFOs organized by the UFO Society of Ireland, which, according to a Carl Nally, co-founder of UFO and Paranormal Research Ireland, is "the most amazing and spectacular I have ever seen".

I'm very curious to see this footage myself, so if anyone has a link to the video, please share it over in the forums.
